Hi,  I'm new to php.  I just want to place a banner ad and some Google Adsense to my current theme.

Is there an easy way to do this for someone that does not know php?  Is there a free graphical IDE software I could use to drop in the code at the right spot on the screen?

I haven't seen any program that has a wysiwig for PHP. If you do a search here for your key words you will find that many people have already asked the same questions. And I'm sure you'll find that someone has posted the instructions on how to do it.
