Help: How to get people start registering without paid

I have been having the site for past years. What do you advise me to start getting people to register? I mean how do I should promote my site? My site is all SMF softwares.

I have been having difficult to get my site to be promoted and get known to every one and more unique visitors.

I'd like to know how to promote and such to get it going without pay any thing. Cause since I am on issue for money.

First your forums need to be genuinely interesting.. if theyre not then no matter what, people wont register.

Try some other means of advertising - link exchanges, promotion on stumble upon and digg and registering on other forums and putting your link to your website in your signature.
