Outgoing e-mails in UTF-8?

Hello,
I have trouble  modifying the activation and welcome e-mails and translating them to Lithuanian. My forum and language files use UTF-8 encoding.
First of all, does the '// Use numeric entities in the below six strings.' mean that I have to enter HTML entities like ę instead of actual Lithuanian characters? I have entered actual characters and entities too, but nothing seems broken.

The characters show up correctly in the body of the e-mail message, but in the subject I get them converted to HTML entities. It doesn't matter if I enter a HTML entity or the actual character in the subject in the language file, in my e-mail client it will still show up as HTML entity. Here's what I mean:

Now I know Yahoo! might not be the best webmail out there, but it does display Lithuanian characters in the subject correctly for e-mails I send out with Gmail, etc. Plus the SMF e-mails have this in their header:

QuoteContent-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

While those from Gmail have this:

QuoteContent-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

Which leads me to believe that SMF doesn't send out proper UTF-8 e-mails... Why?

Please help me get those characters in the subject to display correctly.
