Ok. I'm a hog looking at a wristwatch with this.

I am a volunteer trying to set up SMF for a non-profit (www.partners-international.org).  I have zero programming expertise.

So far I have managed to:

1. Install and configure Apache 2.2 and Apache Tomcat running on a system using Windows 2003 server
2. Install and configure PHO (at least when I run the test it comes up (http://www.cai.servebbs.org/test.php)
3. I have MySQL installed and it says it is running. It must be because someone linked it to another program and that one wored ok.
4. I try to install SMF using the install option: http://www.cai.servebbs.org/SMF/install.php
5. There is no link to the forum now because I can't get it running, but the links above get you to the areas you can including where the install is stuck.
6. I can't find the status.php file. Could that be because the install is not finished?
7. A link to your phpinfo.php is provided above it's the test file.
8. This is a dedicated server see info above
9. My forum has no posts, I'm stuck in the install with this problem
10. There are no users on line due to the fact it is not installed.
11. I have not installed any mods.

when i run the install.php I get the following error message:

The installer was unable to detect any database support in PHP. Please ask your host to ensure that PHP was compiled with the desired database, or that the proper extension is being loaded.

Click here to try this step again.

I went into the php ini file and I "think" i unedited the line for MySQL. (not sure)

I checked the path on my computer and it is set for the PHP and MYSql diectories.

Can someone help me with this?

In the past the person who set up MYSQL for us did it by remore access (another volunteer) and he's not familiar with PHO or SMF... help.

Having issues trying to load that page you provided (it times out).

If you are installing PHP5 on Windows, you must follow the instructions in the MySQL Install section of the PHP Manual to get MySQL support working.

You can download status.php from the sticky in this board, and I believe also the download area on this site. You don't need it at the moment, however.

Also, unless you will be running JSP applications on the server, you do not need Tomcat.

Thanks for the response. I can't figure out why the link isn't working.

try: www.cai.servebbs.org and see if you get a page.

For some reason I'm getting a message saying Port 8080 (TOMCAT) is open but port 80 is closed although the page link I just sent you is running on the Apache server (port 80).

I thought I followed the instructions in the PHP manual but being a novice I may have misunderstood something. I can send the PHP.ini file if it will help.

My machine is also set up for rmote access, but I'd prefer to send that connect info over a private email.

here are the results of the test script.

For some reason I'm getting a message saying Port 8080 (TOMCAT) is open but port 80 is closed although the page link I just sent you is running on the Apache server (port 80).

If you are running on a residential connection with Cox, they block inbound port 80. If you are on a business connection, they don't.

My machine is also set up for rmote access, but I'd prefer to send that connect info over a private email.

That is fine, but I'm a bit busy today at work with a server migration for a big client, so I probably won't be able to try any hands-on help until the weekend at best.

here are the results of the test script.

PHP Version 5.2.6

** snip **

If there is no "mysql" section, then you don't have it set up properly. From the output you pasted, that section doesn't exist. Make sure to read the manual very carefully, there are a few steps in this, and you have to restart Apache HTTPd if you are running PHP as a module, which you are.

  • Put the location of libmysql.dll on your path.
  • Enable the mysql extension inside php.ini
  • Make sure to set the right path for the extension directory
  • Restart Apache HTTPd if running PHP as a module

While enabling modules, you might also want to enable the gd module. You will also need to set the proper SMTP relay for PHP to use when sending mail as Windows doesn't have a built-in sendmail command.

Thankls I'll try that and post the results. Let me know when you have any "hands on" time.

I'm on COX residential, so should I try to get Apahe to look at port 8080? That is what Tomcat is running and people have no problem hitting the server on port 8080

http://www.cai.servebbs.org:8080/

This is on the pache server port 80 that people seem able to hit as well:

http://www.cai.servebbs.org:80

Probably because it isn't a default port and Cox isn't blocking it inbound. They do block normal port 80 (http) on their residential connections. I highly advise not running a server on their residential connections, it is against their AUP and can get you banned from their service.

I'll be glad to try and help, but you should know about the possible repercussions of that. Yes, you can try to get Apache to listen on an alternate port to troubleshoot.

Ok. I'll check with them. If We need to upgrade the service we can.

We've had a webdrive up for about a year or so and they have not given us any problem. Probably because it is for a non-profit and the traffic is so low (as it will be with this) with just connecting remote fokes on a project so they can communicate.

Quite possibly. It could also just be the different port number too. Let me know if you need any more help getting the mysql extension working.

I'm definately stuck on getting the MYSQL working.

I went through the documentation and did eveything I saw they weresaying to do.

I'm sure I'm missing something real simple, but for the life of me I can't figure it out.  I can send you the INI files or give you remote access when you have time to tinket with it.  Whatever is easier.

Post your php.ini

Also what is the location of your extension directory

That plays an important part and is set under extension_dir   in the php.ini

To make Apache listen on other ports open httpd.conf and look for

Listen 80  Add a line below for any other ports you want
Listen 8080  This will make it use 8080 as well

Also if you left click your apache icon mouse up to apache and you should see the option to test port 80.It will then tell you for sure what is using it.

Also make sure to restart apache after making config changes or it will not see them as it only reads the files when it starts up.

Beat with me. I'm not the greatest at this. We have our donated machine set up so that we let volunteers remote access it to help with the programming, so I'm not the sharpest pencil inthe box on getting into this.

I'm not sure what you mean by the extension directory, bur this is what I found that seems like it. it is for a directory in the PHO folder called "ext" which I assume stands for extensions:

C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\PHP\ext

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About php.ini   ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior.  In order for PHP to
; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'.  PHP looks for it in the current
; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory.  The
; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
; the -c argument in command line mode.
;
; The syntax of the file is extremely simple.  Whitespace and Lines
; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
; they might mean something in the future.
;
; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
; directive = value
; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
;
; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
;
; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
; |        bitwise OR
; &        bitwise AND
; ~        bitwise NOT
; !        boolean NOT
;
; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
;
; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
; sign, or by using the None keyword:
;
;  foo =         ; sets foo to an empty string
;  foo = none    ; sets foo to an empty string
;  foo = "none"  ; sets foo to the string 'none'
;
; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
;
;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About this file ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; This is the recommended, PHP 5-style version of the php.ini-dist file.  It
; sets some non standard settings, that make PHP more efficient, more secure,
; and encourage cleaner coding.
;
; The price is that with these settings, PHP may be incompatible with some
; applications, and sometimes, more difficult to develop with.  Using this
; file is warmly recommended for production sites.  As all of the changes from
; the standard settings are thoroughly documented, you can go over each one,
; and decide whether you want to use it or not.
;
; For general information about the php.ini file, please consult the php.ini-dist
; file, included in your PHP distribution.
;
; This file is different from the php.ini-dist file in the fact that it features
; different values for several directives, in order to improve performance, while
; possibly breaking compatibility with the standard out-of-the-box behavior of
; PHP.  Please make sure you read what's different, and modify your scripts
; accordingly, if you decide to use this file instead.
;
; - register_long_arrays = Off     [Performance]
;     Disables registration of the older (and deprecated) long predefined array
;     variables ($HTTP_*_VARS).  Instead, use the superglobals that were
;     introduced in PHP 4.1.0
; - display_errors = Off           [Security]
;     With this directive set to off, errors that occur during the execution of
;     scripts will no longer be displayed as a part of the script output, and thus,
;     will no longer be exposed to remote users.  With some errors, the error message
;     content may expose information about your script, web server, or database
;     server that may be exploitable for hacking.  Production sites should have this
;     directive set to off.
; - log_errors = On                [Security]
;     This directive complements the above one.  Any errors that occur during the
;     execution of your script will be logged (typically, to your server's error log,
;     but can be configured in several ways).  Along with setting display_errors to off,
;     this setup gives you the ability to fully understand what may have gone wrong,
;     without exposing any sensitive information to remote users.
; - output_buffering = 4096        [Performance]
;     Set a 4KB output buffer.  Enabling output buffering typically results in less
;     writes, and sometimes less packets sent on the wire, which can often lead to
;     better performance.  The gain this directive actually yields greatly depends
;     on which Web server you're working with, and what kind of scripts you're using.
; - register_argc_argv = Off       [Performance]
;     Disables registration of the somewhat redundant $argv and $argc global
;     variables.
; - magic_quotes_gpc = Off         [Performance]
;     Input data is no longer escaped with slashes so that it can be sent into
;     SQL databases without further manipulation.  Instead, you should use the
;     function addslashes() on each input element you wish to send to a database.
; - variables_order = "GPCS"       [Performance]
;     The environment variables are not hashed into the $_ENV.  To access
;     environment variables, you can use getenv() instead.
; - error_reporting = E_ALL        [Code Cleanliness, Security(?)]
;     By default, PHP suppresses errors of type E_NOTICE.  These error messages
;     are emitted for non-critical errors, but that could be a symptom of a bigger
;     problem.  Most notably, this will cause error messages about the use
;     of uninitialized variables to be displayed.
; - allow_call_time_pass_reference = Off     [Code cleanliness]
;     It's not possible to decide to force a variable to be passed by reference
;     when calling a function.  The PHP 4 style to do this is by making the
;     function require the relevant argument by reference.
; - short_open_tag = ON           [Portability]
;     Using short tags is discouraged when developing code meant for redistribution
;     since short tags may not be supported on the target server.

ref checking apache for port 80.

The only Apache Icon I have on my screen is the small one all the way at the bottom for the Apache 2.2 monitor. When vice monitor (showing green) but the only options I have are "ok", "stop", "restart", "services", "connect" and exit. Nothing comes up to test port 80.

Right I see.Mine is left and right clickable with different options try this instead

Open a command prompt box and type this into it

netstat -a

This will list what is using the ports. I will look over the config file and see if  I can set it for you unless someone else does it before hand.

I would change this setting in the php.ini

Find
; Directory in which the loadable extensions (modules) reside.
extension_dir = "./"

Change to

extension_dir = "C:\\Program Files\\Apache Software Foundation\\Apache2.2\\PHP\\ext"

Then restart Apache

I tried that but I get the same error.

I did a google search onth error message, but all I found was the following (which doesn't make much sense to me:

http://dev.simplemachines.org/mantis/view.php?id=1863

Thanks for the help and sticking with me on this. I'm sure it's just something simple I'm missing...

The customer migration finished up yesterday, so I might be able to fit some direct assistance in today. How would you like to proceed?

Sorry for the delay in getting to you. I didn't get the usual update.

I'm open to anything.  If it is easier and faster for you I can send you the IP, password and userID to get remote access to the server and you can go in and just have at it.

If you need me to do anything I'm available by phone or skype.

Also, I used some of the advice above and tried to set apache 2.2 up on port 8080 to see

These links should now work (theoretically, in a perfect world) if I got it right:

http://www.cai.servebbs.org/SMF/install.php

http://www.cai.servebbs.org/test.php

you can also try http://www.cai.servebbs.org/

I did the netstat -a as someone above suggested and it saud the following:

Listening to:

HTTP
emmap
microsoft-ds
1025
pptp
3389
8080
8005
netbios-ssn

It has "*.* next to

microsoft-ds
1026
1028
1032
1046
12tp
4500
ntp
1030
1031
mtp
netbios-ns
netbios-dgm

If any of that means anything

Let me know.

Bob
