Cool. Now can you do a version for 1.1.5? Us Neanderthals need troll tracking too.  ;)

Aw Pete... I don't have a test forum to test it on 1.1.5... How about you PM the admin password for your nice site and I'll bork... er... test it there. ;)

Antechinus

I think I've already edited our test forum as I didn't have the local back then. Mind you I can reverse the edit easily enough if you feel like playing with it.

Thank you for the nice mod. Its good to see an alternative to WhereIs, that doesn't require you to choose between a whole series of databases. :D

So is it good with 1.1.5?
Anybody?

I'm going to modify the package probably later today to achieve 1.1.5 compatibility. It would probably be better if you just hold off until I've made the dual version modification available.

I'm drafting antechinus to test the 1.1.5 version of this mod and I'll upload the improved version to the modsite ASAP.

Thank you all for the compliments! :)

TheDisturbedOne

Thanks!  (I run 1.1.5 also and could really use this)  Does it tell you the location when you click on the IP address?  Or is it one the admin Cp?

Look at any post on your site and note the IP address in the lower right corner. Click the link and you will be taken to your Track IP page. The mod adds the link IP 2 Location (all regions) to the list of whois servers that appears on that page. Click that link and the IP address is automatically inserted into your request and you are taken to the IP2Location website where you can see the results of your query.

Anybody who wants to see a sample of their report should click the link above and then insert your own IP address in the demo to see how well they track your own IP. Again, it depends on where you are. If you live in the US then most lookups resolve to the correct town or a nearby town. Some ISPs don't provide good information so it may resolve to only a state. In some cases of multi-state ISPs who are not cooperative it may even resolve to the wrong state. This is not a 100% thing, but my experience is that at least 95% of my own lookups resolve to at least a mid-sized nearby city in the correct state. I've verified this against IP addresses of friends where I knew their true location.

Honestly, even when you aren't tracking down troublesome visitors, it's kind of fun to play with this tool, even somewhat addictive. ;) Yesterday morning somebody from the SMF forum was helping me check out some stuff and it was interesting that I hadn't realized he was located in Australia until I tracked him. Late last night I noticed a guest reading my site, and I tracked him/her down to Russia! I'm amazed that my site URL has made it all the way around the world, and I've only been up three weeks! :)

This is a really fun and useful tool, and it's amazing that it took only several lines of code to automate it into SMF!

Please find attached, a TEST VERSION of Add IPLocation to Track IP, version 0.99 (almost there!). Note that I have given the package a quick test on my test forum, and I intend to sacrifice my production forum as the final verification of the package for the SMF 2.0 version, but this has not been done yet. Note also that this package HAS NOT BEEN TESTED for the SMF 1.1.5 version.

Antechinus has been volunteered ;) to verify the package on SMF 1.1.5 and I'm withholding final release pending his findings. I won't mind if others also feel like testing the package, and in fact I'll welcome a few reports from both 1.1.5 operators and 2.0 operators, if any are interested. Either use your test system or backup your Profile.english.php, and Profile-View.php (2.0) or Profile.php (1.1.5), before adding the mod.

Most of the work was dual-moding the mod package to add 1.1.5 capability. The code itself is identical for both SMF versions, excepting only that it is located in Profile-View.php (2.0) vs. Profile.php (1.1.5).

Well even though I didnt install it yet, I used it to track down some Google and Yahoo bots.  nice website, cant wait for 1.1.5 :)

Antechinus

Just tested it on my online test forum (don't trust XAMPP for everything  ;) ) and it went in without problems and seems to work perfectly. Uninstall is also clean. No error messages in the log and no broken functions.

This was on a forum running 1.1.5 with TP 0.983 and the Add Domaintools, vReportBoard, IgnoreUser, AEVC and SMF Radio mods. Looks like it's good to go.

Add IP2Location to Track IP has now been upgraded to be compatible with both SMF 2.0 Beta 3.1 Public and SMF 1.1.5. The new version 1.0 is available at the modsite.

Add IP2Location to Track IP version 1.0

I would like to express my appreciation to antechinus for his assistance in testing the modification for 1.1.5 compatibility. :)

tk2012

Got this error when adding this to my site.  I'm on V2.0 B3.1 w/ default theme...

Not sure if I have to worry about it since it installed with no problems and there is no reason to install again, but wanted to post it in case someone else gets it..  thoughts?

Thanks for the report tk2012. I'm sure the "Undefined index: package_readme" error was nothing to be concerned about, but I was able to verify it so I fixed it. Add IP2Location to Track IP was my debut mod package and I have since become a bit more sophisticated, so I repackaged it with a BBC readme.txt file and the error went away. The BBC readme.txt is prettier too. :)

This modification has been verified to operate properly with SMF 2.0b4 and I intend to verify SMF 1.1.6 compatibility after I have verified and/or upgraded all my other mod packages for Beta 4 compatibility.

The new Add IP2Location to Track IP version 1.1 is now available at the mod site. There is no need to install the new version if you have already installed the old version. There were no code changes.

Welcome

I like your mods.  Most are short & sweet, but have a nice impact on a site.  You're a great addition to their team!

Deprecated

Thanks for the compliment! That's what I like too, short and sweet. I'm a perfectionist and I like everything neat and in its place, with no bloat, and everything uniform and seamless. I try to accomplish that in all my work, not only mod packages but also in my professional work. No job is worth doing unless it is worth doing well.

This modification has been verified to work properly with both SMF 1.1.6 and SMF 2.0 Beta 4.
