Quite often I have IMs and just dont notice them, a notification makes it unmissable, and gives a chance to jump straight to the IM Inbox from the dialog

The users on one of my boards would love this, because that's what they mostly use.  I'd also like one, because you don't always notice when there is a new message.  Also, you could have the option to have a pop up or not, so if you don't like it, it won't bother you.  Should be just a piece of java and a few mods. 

Is there any way you can make your IM link refresh every so often, without having the whole page refresh--like put it in an iframe or something?

I find this noticable enough:  Hey, bostasp, you have 13 messages, 0 are new.

I don't think anyone would object to it being a mod with switches.  Not everyone would want to use it.

So make it so the user can decide if he wants it to popup or not.
