I'm just curious as to how many of you guys have press releases?

What sort of stuff do you put in them? Have they helped you?

No.

But then, the types of sites i've ever been involved with (other than sm.org) are more about publishing information contained by press releases -- not the other way around.

Gaming companies release press releases with information on upcoming products and product launches.

Gaming news sites pick those up and post it.  Then RSS feed aggregators pick up some of those postings and the news spreads.

With my site we did our responses to changes in the UK health system that affect fertility treatments.  That was up until a few years ago - and now the press/tv, radio & health regulators contact me direct for responses - so I don't have the hurdle of getting them through the pile of other PR's that they look through.

*edit - evil spelling monster messed with my words ;D

IMO it wouldn't be a good idea to do a press release purely for the forum itself as people are unlikely to take it seriously. It has to contain a really good reason for people to actually visit your site

However what Tony has done is probably a good idea. Use the news or something specific that has been achieved as the main item in the press-release but mention the forum nearer the end.

Well I was thinking of one for BRS, so that people could write about us I suppose. I read somewhere that when you relaunch a site you should have one ready so bloggers and that could write about you easily.

I'm not relaunching but I think it might help us look more professional. Also, I'm very close to the bloggers in my niche - and soon I'll send them guest posts on some issues surrounding my niche. It's all good and dandy for them to interview me or what ever, but what if they don't want to do that? I think even if they did it might be nice to have some sort of media/press package they can download and use.

BRS would benefit from press releases for announcing successful publications of their members, whether these be within magazines, books - or indeed contests.

Yeah....but thus far we don't have anything of interest. We have several members looking into it, and we have members who achieved it before joining us.

In that case - you have nothing of interest for the general public.

You need to generate something that will be of interest for people to read in the news.

If you know where your membership demographics are then you could run a competition for a free annual subscription to a magazine, then email the magazine in question telling them what you are doing, and I am sure they will publish it :)

You then have the opportunity to go back to them announcing the winner.

Get mentioned twice - but for a much lower cost than advertising with them once :)

Liam.

I've not got one myself for my main website, but I am releasing one for one of my networked sites (RateYourGames), which as a gaming company has a good way to use the Media Packs...

I hope you know I'm the Language Coordinator of SimplePortal and I take offence to you using it without a copyright.

What are you going to put into yours?
