php.ini installing
« on: October 29, 2009, 08:14:04 PM »
I used an old version of smf for years with little trouble or maintenance needed.

I am now doing a new install of smf version  1.1.10 I'm not sure what the old version was, I can't seem to access it now after changing the php on the server (Go Daddy) from 4 to 5 before the new upgrade. I am clueless and trying to take this a step at a time. EXTRA clueless might be a better description.

I read this in the README: Checklist for performance problems thread: "Get PHP 5! Its been stable for quite some time now. Run the php.ini-recommended (just erase the '-recommended'). I recommend turning on display_errors and turning off error_logging. Unless you want to stick with the errors going straight to logs."

I have no php.ini file and am wondering what the "php.ini recommended" might be. will the install files unpack one? I have made a phpinfo.php file and put it into the root directory. This location is http://www.hypercrites.org/phpinfo.php

I am taking the system requirements a step at a time, my next step is setting up the DB. I hope to get the php.ini file right first then move on to that. Any help with the php.ini file would be very greatly appreciated I have looked around on smf first but have not been able to find an answer to what may or may not be an easy question.

 Thanks and best regards

I believe it was 1.1.2 initially, and when upgrading to 1.1.3 caused problems, I uninstalled that upgrade. I recently appealed for help on using the webinstall.php and didn't get useful advice on that. Good luck.

If you are on shared hosting, you will likely not have access to php.ini.

php.ini is a file which is not part of SMF, it is part of the PHP engine installation, done by your host. Please ask your host about the PHP version they're running, and about anything you can do concerning this recommendation. As said before, they most likely don't give a shared account access to that file itself.

Thanks! Are there installs of smf on go daddy shared hosting accounts to the best of your knowledge?

I'm not sure I am getting good clear info from the tech rep I spoke with at GoDaddy. They are speaking of a php.ini file as if it is something I should add to the root directory of my file structure. Is this something that is do-able on a shared hosting account?

Yes, SMF works fine on properly managed shared hosting. There are also many people using SMF with GoDaddy's shared hosting. Personally, I think it's poorly run hosting (it's oversold and accounts are packed on servers much like sardines in a tin or people in a New York subway).

Some hosts allow you to use custom php.ini files to adjust certain settings. It all depends on the hosting. Normally, you shouldn't need to mess with the configuration of components to get SMF running.

That checklist you mentioned on this site is for those having performance problems and contains tips for users running on all types of hosting, so some of those tips may not necessarily be applicable to shared hosting.

My budget is very limited and Go Daddy has hosted our other SMF forum since we put it up with virtually no problems or down time, I'd like to stick with them if possible. If you know of another SMF forum being hosted on Go Daddy on a shared hosting plan please let me know. I'm guessing here but if I can find one perhaps I can see how it is set up and ask what they did to correct any problems they encountered.

Thanks again to both yourself and Motoko-Chan for your efforts.

Cool thanks! As far as you know is Go Daddy good to go as far as "plug and playing" an SMF Forum? I'm getting some odd feedback from the tech I spoke with who seems to have the opinion the php.ini file si something I can install in the root directory of my file system. I'm hoping it's something I don't need to do anything with :)

Thanks for the input I included the url for the phpinfo.ini file in the OP if you don't mind having a quick look please let me know if you see anything that could be a game breaker in the tea leaves, if i have a specific problem there perhaps I can get a tech to change it (again thanks so much!!!)

Finally I am having a little (LITTLE) problem getting the database set up properly if you know of a good tutorial or the the correct forum section to look on any information regarding this would be of great help!

I ask a lot of this here because the answers I get seem to be much more helpful than the tech service at go daddy I'll try not to burn up all the bandwidth here asking what seem to be stupid questions and try to keep you and any that have helped informed of any progress or workarounds I may find elsewhere. I'm just at the bottom of the learning curve and need a little direction :)

You should normally not need to do anything more than see in your host panel, in a section named Databases or something similar, a link to create a new database. Create it, and please make sure you keep in mind its name, server, a user name for it, and a password of this user.
With those data you can go on with installing SMF wizard, (http://download.simplemachines.org/), and give them to the installer when asked.
Please check out:

If that doesn't help please tell what exactly does the problem consist in.

Thanks Norv! I'll work on it today I'm just not putting the right info into the right places I think. I will make a renewed effort to do so particularly the server name as I think this may be the hang up.

I will try and concentrate on that today during the day and evening as I can around a couple of appointments and Apple time. (Apple is my5 year old daughter who I raise alone) If I can't get it up by late this evening I will ask for help and send any info I can, on the other hand if I get it figured out I will post my news of my triumphant success here.

 Best Regards

Please note that it's your host's panel page who will display the server name after you create the database (might be "localhost", or anything they have set up). It's their server, their page should simply list it for you.

Please, feel free to let us know how it goes, if you wish. :)

Thanks for the help, it put me in the right direction. GO Daddy was not very helpful and had no idea about the data base they said it was not part of what they support. The answers were found in a sub panel accessed by clicking the edit button of particular database listed in the host panel. Localhost was a no go and  Ihad to manually enter the number listed on the sub panel.

The upside is it's all good now! Thanks again!

If anyone is having a problem with this on a Go Daddy server feel free to pm me and I will offer you what advice I can or walk you through the process as best I can.

For all I can tell, helping to identify the database created on their server with their panel is exactly a host's support responsibility, IMO. But in any case, it's really good to hear you got it sorted out in any case!

Please feel free to mark the topic as solved using the green button to the bottom left of the screen, in case you consider it solved.
