There's an awful lot of difference, mostly with new features.

Of the things 2.0 has that 1.1 doesn't, the real big things are post moderation (so users can't see posts until approved), paid subscriptions handling, warning system, moderation centre for keeping an eye on people.

You'll find most mods work better and rely less on theme edits, plus the option to attempt to install on multiple themes direct from package manager.

There's a long list, though, and ideally try it for yourself.

I personally believe 2.0 is better, but 1.1 is stable and considered mature since it's effectively 3 years old with only receiving security patches since then, while 2.0 is still in active development.

Why doesn't it work? What do you expect it to do?

Sure. It's possible to convert directly to RC2 when it's out.

But... you'll lose your existing mods (unless their author has updated them) and your theme (unless its author has updated it)

RC2 is not publicly available at this time as per the download page. It is available to Charter members, those who donate towards the costs incurred by Simple Machines (e.g. hosting), as a reward for their donation.

RC1.2 has most of the above mentioned features, just not the same theme as RC2 does, and has more bugs, since both RC1.2 and RC2 are release candidates, not final releases.

Is there a "What's new in 2?" type document/post? I've used SMF for a while and am eager to upgrade to the latest and greatest, but I'd like to prep for what's to come (or at least be in the know).

I've searched around and don't really see anything like this on the site, so I suspect this is as good a place as any to ask this question and the fact this thread essentially makes the same query.

There is a post in development with all the changes - it's pretty huge. But since we're still straightening out a few things, we haven't finalised it yet.
