  Reasoning:
  SMF's BBC code is designed to be similar to HTML. This similarity brings certain expectations with it, people expect the BBC code to be interpreted in the same way as HTML. HTML ignores whitespace between elements (for the most part).
  
  The [
  ] element is most clearly and naturally written with new items on each line. If you do this at the moment, SMF will insert a <br /> element in-between each item, making the list appear stretched apart with lots of unnecessary vertical space.
  
  The fix should be a relatively easy reg-ex update
