I'm not sure if this is a bug, or what it is, but its a function that has disappeared.
The thing is, that you could after you had written something in this text box ( where you are/I'm posting right now ) accidentally push some other button and then be able to use the "go back" in the web browser and the text you had written would still be there, it does seem to work in IE8, but its not working in FF. Its with RC2 and RC3 its not working (tested it in out of the box installations) but does work in RC1. It's currently not saving what you have written here on SMF forums (use FF and test it, "new topic" write something in the text area, press either a link and then backwards, or press backwards in the browser and then forward)
The Subject text area is saved , and so is if you enable quick reply in RC3, but not these big post text areas.

While this is not a major major thing, its very annoying, and since I updated to RC3 a lot of clumsy people has lost what they have written (me included :p), by accidentally pressing some wrong key combination making you go to a different page/ accidentally pressing backwards button on the mouse, loosing all you've written in the process.
Has anyone else been noticing this?

Arantor

It's a bug in SMF; I spent several days earlier this week dealing with it for SimpleDesk which suffered from the same thing.

Fixing it, however, is much easier said than done and I don't think it can easily be fixed in SMF itself.

Yeah I thought as much, I tho did a comparison of post.php of rc1 and rc3 there is not many differences, I'm probably looking at the wrong file tho, as replacing the post.php from rc3 with a rc1 didn't help.
Is there perhaps some dirty trick to get it working?

Arantor

It's not just Post.php, it's the templates, it's also the Javascript. It's a lot of changes and those changes have consequences to be aware of.

I'd suggest you wait for a proper fix in SMF to be honest since the 'dirty trick' we used cost me 18 hours of development time to add on a mod for SMF, which doesn't even use the main thread posting code.

okay! Thanks Arantor!
I'll be waiting for a proper fix then!
*wonders if there is a bug report on the issue*

Any updates with this issue?
I'm using RC5 and this annoying problem still exists.

Arantor

I don't think SMF are aware it's a bug...

How can we make them be aware of that?

Arantor

Post in the bug reports board... you'll note the original discussion was a year ago...
