Is latest stable SMF suitable for commercial board 'out of the box' ?

I will be setting up a forum online (my first) and it will be a business site with lots of visitors.

This has been planned for many months now.

My main questions are whether SMF latest will need mods etc installed to keep spammers off, and for vbulletin like user managment.

Depends exactly what user management you want and how persistent the spammers are. No software will stop all of them.

My question is do you think it is robust enough 'out of box' - or should I plan to hire someone to configure, install add ons, etc.

I am tech smart but not experienced with SMF or forum software yet.

I think it is, but I don't know what you require in the way of user management.
