Custom user table/registration

I am trying to integrate an SMF forum with my existing site, which uses a custom CMS and user management. What I would like to do is to modify the login/register functions in order for them to use my existing users mysql table, and also to allow website logged in users to be logged in for the forum too,

Can anyone tell me which functions I should modify and in which files they are?
