Issues with Left Block and Banner
« on: July 05, 2010, 06:04:15 AM »
I'm relatively new to Simple Machines and I'm having some issues with the theme I installed and getting the left block to appear.  I've checked all the boxes I can think of that would matter in the articles and in the Block Manager portion, but they just won't show up.

I'd like one category on my front page so that people not logged in can see it, and then a few more in addition to that once people have logged in.

From what I can tell people need my index.template.php file...so here it is.  Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated.  I'd love to get this site figured out ASAP.

Also - I'd like to know how I can change the banner image.  A friend of mine set this site up for me, but it's his domain.  I have full admin rights, but I don't know if it's even doable for me.  If it is I'd love to change it on my own so I don't have to bug him with things.

Ok so here's my file...

Code: [Select]
<?php
// Version: 1.1; index

/*   This template is, perhaps, the most important template in the theme. It
   contains the main template layer that displays the header and footer of
   the forum, namely with main_above and main_below. It also contains the
   menu sub template, which appropriately displays the menu; the init sub
   template, which is there to set the theme up; (init can be missing.) and
   the linktree sub template, which sorts out the link tree.

   The init sub template should load any data and set any hardcoded options.

   The main_above sub template is what is shown above the main content, and
   should contain anything that should be shown up there.

   The main_below sub template, conversely, is shown after the main content.
   It should probably contain the copyright statement and some other things.

   The linktree sub template should display the link tree, using the data
   in the $context['linktree'] variable.

   The menu sub template should display all the relevant buttons the user
   wants and or needs.

Hi, Svannah! Welcome to the forum and SMF!

I'm gonna assume something, here, as you're talking about blocks...

I assume you've installed a portal.

Fancy giving us a clue as to which one?

When you installed it, did you make the required manual edits, to make the portal work with custom themes?

You can see those edits, if you go to the portal's download page (Assuming you got it from here) and, just below the download link, check-out the parser.

TinyPortal is already there - I didn't install it, so I'm guessing my friend did when he set up this site for me.  He's got two other websites under the same domain and they both have custom themes and left blocks, so I'd have to imagine I can too.

My site: grayorder.org/csw/index.php
One of his: grayorder.org/swtor/index.php?page=15
The other one of his: grayorder.org/aoc/

Yeah, most surely.

It may well be that you have to make the edits that I described, though, for a custom theme.

So I'm out of luck then? :(

What about a banner?

WHy are you out of luck?

Can you not do manual edits?

Where do you want the banner?

Do you want it like I have it, here? http://www.tlakoc.org.uk

Haha I don't know how to do manual edits is all I meant.

And where you have "the last alliance" is exactly what I want to change.

Ah... Go on, be brave!

As long as you back everything up, first, what can go wrong? :)

Just checked your site. Is it that huge "Diabalo" thing you want to change?

I just downloaded that theme and it's easier than you might think. ;)

Inside that theme's "images" directory, you'll find header.jpg.

That's the image.

Just replace that with whatever you like!

Yes I want the Diablo thing gone and have a new banner put there instead.  My friend that made the site for me can change the images, so I'll probably have to work with him to actually replace it. I was just hoping there was a way around that.

As for the blocks I'd do the editing, but I just don't know WHAT to edit.

Have a look here:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=97

Assuming that's right, look under "Download this mod" and you'll see "Manual Install Instructions for SMF".

Under that, select the version of SMF that you're using and hit "Parse".

That'll show you what edits you need to make.

You can ignore most of them, but you'll need to make the edits that are theme-specific.

Changing the image is dead easy, if you use FTP. Just replace it with whatever you like.

Just checked.

You only need to edit the theme's index.template.

Find:
Code: [Select]
if (in_array($context['current_action'], array('search', 'admin', 'calendar', 'profile', 'mlist', 'register', 'login', 'help', 'pm')))
Replace With:
Code: [Select]
if (in_array($context['current_action'], array('search', 'admin', 'calendar', 'profile', 'mlist', 'register', 'login', 'help', 'pm', 'forum', 'tpadmin')))
Find:
Code: [Select]
$current_action = 'search';
Add After:
Code: [Select]
if (isset($_GET['dl']))
$current_action = 'dlmanager';

if (isset($_GET['board']) || isset($_GET['topic']) || $context['current_action']=='forum')
$current_action = 'forum';

if ($context['current_action']=='tpadmin')
$current_action = 'admin';

and

Find:
Code: [Select]
// Show the [help] button.
Add before:
Code: [Select]
if($settings['TPortal_front_type']!='boardindex')
// Show the [forum] button.
echo ($current_action=='forum' || $context['browser']['is_ie4']) ? '<td class="maintab_active_first">&nbsp;</td>' : '' , '
<td valign="top" class="maintab_' , $current_action=='forum' ? 'active_back' : 'back' , '">
<a href="', $scripturl, '?action=forum">'.$txt['tp-forum'].'</a>
</td>' , $current_action=='forum' ? '<td class="maintab_active_last">&nbsp;</td>' : '';

I dunno what to do now. I guess either try and find a new theme that's compatible, or just go without the blocks?

I'm wondering if you might get better help in Tiny Portal's support topic.

I can manage with most of the information I need in a forum board visible by guests, but it would have been nice to include a shout box and other block categories.  I'll make due for now and keep plugging away at it.  I like this theme too much to look for a new one.  Not many good ones out there, unfortunately.

I greatly appreciate your efforts though!
