Pachages help

Hello everyone.
I need help with installing my packages . . from the "New packages"  I liked "Guest Registration Notification 1.1" and I tried to install it, All of my files are on 0777 code restriction therefore they are fully writable, yet when I tried to install the packages it said that the files are not writable therefore not installable. I tried to manually install it with help of that parse button thingy and I editted all files but nothing on my site showed up, everything basically stayed normal. so can someone help me out with installing these packages???

First, obvious, question is "Are you using the SMF default theme?".

If you're using a custom theme, did you make the required edits to the custom theme's files, too?
