Can some please direct me to the lastest mod to use to protect against bots?

I currently have no mods installed for this.

Not sure what the latest is and why you only want the latest, but this should give you an overview of available mods:

I heard through the grapevine that a few weeks ago there was a series of bot attacks on smf forums. new members with weird names were signing up. in their profiles there was a website link. if you clicked on those website links you were on a page that had spyware and virus. i thought that smf had a mod to protect against that.

Not for as far as I know. Most spamrelated mods are in the link I posted.

This is one of the best, in terms of keeping your guards up and up to date Stop Spammer.

But to simply block bots, you don't even need that - you just need to adjust your settings, make registering a bit harder and disallow signatures (and other profile data) from newbie members.
