Question about "Last post" box on main page

I've noticed that while this box can display the last post of a subforum under a particular forum, it cannot display the last post of a subforum of a subforum under a particular forum.  Is there any way this could be changed?  I am comfortable making code changes, I just would not know where to find this function.

No, this is how it works by default. It's to protect mysql from overloading. Getting data from children of children (of children of children of children) simply takes too much strain on the server.
