hi there,

i have done so much mucking about with file permissions lately trying to get mods to install, is there an easy way to reset them to what they should be? or at least a safe state? i dont know what needs to be writable and what really needs not to be!

thanks in advance

well, keep the sources folder and themes folder 777 because almost every mod changes it and index.php 777 that's it i think =)
EDIT: as far as i know, other must be 644 or something

Go to Admin>Packages>File Permissions.

At the bottom, set "Use predefined permission profile:" to "Standard" and you can't go wrong. ;)

great! just what i was after thank you - solved!

edit: its not working - it just keeps refreshing itself at this:

0 of 231 directories completed
0%

1 of 26 files done in current directory
3.8%

after i click 'make changes', its the 'applying changes' screen this is happening

It may do a single file/directory at a time, so allow it to refresh as it is, and it should stop eventually.  It does the same with emails, and SMF will take small breaks to prevent spamming it.
