How to create a theme?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place and even sorrier if I sound ignorant.  I have been teaching myself all about codes, php, etc.  I am understanding this better and would like to learn to create some themes of my own to contribute here since I have been fortunate to have access to so many wonderful themes and skins here, and all free...WOW.  I do not want to just take, but also to contribute and help others.

So my question is, would anyone here who is experienced in making themes and skins be willing to direct me to where I can learn how to do this myself?
