Duplicate php files

I've just been going through some folders via ftp and noticed some duplicate files.

These are in the sources folder


I also have some in these folders

default, default/css, default/languages & the core folder.

Now is it ok to just delete these? I deleted 1 (saved it 1st) and the forum seems to be ok, but I also want to know why these files keep appearing!!

Those are backup files that your server creates whenever you edit a file. They can be useful, but if you don't need them it's fine to delete them.
