Can an rtf file be an attachment?

I just tried with a pretty large file. It loaded for a very long time, several minutes, and then I got an internal server error.

Yes any file can be an attachment based on your attachment settings.

Depending on the filesize of the file it may exceed your server/hosting provider limits. A lot of these places will limit file uploads to a couple megabytes by default.

It's not the host, but isn't there a file size limitation in SMF? Can I remove that for just one post or give myself permission as admin to exceed it? Thanks!

There are attachment settings that you can set under Avatars and Attachment settings to control filesize,filetypes of the uploaded files.
