I have a db which used SMF 1.1 and Sphinx Portal, I have no longer access to settings.php.

What are the easiests steps to move up to 2.04.rc4?

- db is installed on my host
- can I just do/run the large update or does it need the settings.php?

Thanks, got bit further.

- run the repair_settings.php
- also fixed the path in the database table "smf_themes table entry for "theme_dir"

Now if I run upgrade.php I either have the login rejected, i.e. password is just blanked out when I use port 21, after googling a bit I see that some sites use 3306, but then I get an error message which is all "garbeled" (encoding problem?).

error:
The following error was encountered when trying to connect:

5.0.90-logŸÿ!:=efP<|,¢}"+O0@3}

My host is hxxp:ovh.com [nonactive].

Anyone has an idea?  I contact OVH support too, but I don't think they support SMF as such.

well I just had like 3 intensive days of switching from 1.1.11 to 2.0 rc4 and
If it says password or login rejected, thats your problem.

You need to check out your database and see which specific user with the admin priviledges , database name and password to that database is needed. Its very specific.
I think thats the first thing you should clear out.

The password, login and db information work when I attach using phpmyadmin, so I don't think it is a password issue.

However when I attach using phpmyadmin there is no port no to be specified and I am not sure what the right port is (but I assume OVH will get back to me with that).
