Hey,

Im downloading pretty URLs, and in order to enable rewriting, i gotta change permissions of .htaccess from 644 to 666.
This is what I get in my FTP (filezilla):

QuoteStatus:   Set permissions of '/public_html/.htaccess' to '666'
Command:   SITE CHMOD 666 .htaccess
Response:   550 Could not change perms on .htaccess: Operation not permitted

I tried it on my hosting site file manager, but .htaccess won't even show up there.

Please help.

Thank you.

The reason .htaccess does not show in your cPanel file manager is that your host most likely has some weird security settings.

As for not being able to modify permissions on .htaccess, check with your host and ask them to change the ownership.

are you using cpanel's file manager? when you log into the file manager make sure it shows hidden files then you should be able to view the file and change the permission.

that tip was good Illori, but it still gives the same error as it gave in the FTP. What does this error mean and why am I getting it?

You need to consult your hosting company to provide you the ownership for .htaccess file. You can then later change the permissions.
