Is this a hacking attempt?

I keep getting what seems to be a hack attempt. They all try to send the following string:

2: preg_match() [<a href='function.preg-match'>function.preg-match</a>]: Unknown modifier '{'
?action=register2

It doesn't work, but I'm curious, what are they trying to achieve?
