New member issues - how do I stop spammers?

I have been getting loads of new sign ups and I am sure most are spam.
Is there an easy efficient way to stop this issue

check the building your community board, it has some threads on the issue. but it comes down to trying several or more of those mods until you find a combination that works best on your forum. not all of those mods work well on all forums due to configurations and audience.
