The GameThinker.com Gaming Forum

The GameThinker.com Gaming Forum has returned from limbo and is now running on SMF 1.1.13.  :D

This board was a very large gaming community a year or so ago (PR5)  and has ~280,000 posts. It originally ran on VBulletin ver 3.8, but the site crashed when one of the VBulletin plugins got majorly borked.

We acquired the domain and forum and converted it to SMF 1.1.13. A custom theme (Musiconica*) and some under-the-hood anti-spam and anti-bot code was added. (The site had been heavily inundated with spam- most of it is now gone but there's still some being cleaned out.)

A note about the theme: We're not sure it's the "final" one. A lot of people have said that most gaming forums are (or should be) "dark" in nature, like the Black Rain theme (demo forum), or the Serene Forest theme. We'd really like to hear what people think about this; with some encouragement and/or suggestions we'd definitely change the theme to something that's more typical of a game forum. Please let us know what you think!

Packages added include:

  • Board Notes ver 1.0.7
  • Disable 'last edit by...' for Administrators ver 1.1
  • Member Notepad  ver 1.0
  • Hide SMF Version ver 1.0.6
  • TextareaResizer ver 1.1
  • Tagging System ver 2.4.2 (Not in use at this time)
  • Quick Ban on Account Delete ver 1.0.1
  • Avatar Verification ver 1.4.1 (Not in use at this time)
We modified the Avatar Verification package slightly to use a specific set of icons. It's not turned on at this time, but we suspect it'll be needed before long. (We think the Avatar Verification package is a "must have" mod for any forum to help keep bots at bay.)

Custom icons for the "new posts" indicators were subbed in and some minor tweaks to the CSS were added.

Some additional anti-bot code was added, as well as code that prevents saving profile fields or leaving external links in posts unless the user has 5 or more posts to their credit.

We plan to do a one-time mass-mailing to the user base to let them know that the forum is back on the air and to get things moving again.

Anyway, that's about it. :)  If you like playing or discussing games, please stop by and join in!

*We also used the Musiconica theme for CoderZone.org. What can we say- we like the theme!

Its OK.
2 sets of ads on every page makes me look the other way,and those child board icons kill me.
The basic forum and header are pretty nice.
