As a newbie on SMF I'm looking for a second opinion of moving a existing SMF site (1.12) from a Windows ASP environment to an UNIX SMF 2.0 installation. Underlying DB is in both cases MySQL but I will of course use Apache under UNIX. No mods installed, Language is UTF-8 Swedish. I have a test environment already up and running under UNIX without data and the site works as expected

The current 1.12 installation do not seem to be correct (not possible to automatically update and several old files) and I therefore have the following sequence planned.

1.   Backup of complete SMF site and full DB
2.   Upgrade existing SMF site to 1.14 through large upgrade
3.   Test site on 1.14 and see if it's a correct installation
4.   Backup of 1.14 DB and complete SMF site

5.   Move URL (DNS) to UNIX site

6.   Install full 1.14 package and language packs on UNIX site + restore DB through PHPMyAdmin. One question here:. Will I then (providing everything works) have an exact copy of the original site (with users and data) but now under UNIX or do I need to restore any other files?

7.   Test new UNIX site on 1.14
8.   Backup of 1.14 DB and complete SMF UNIX site

9.   Install large upgrade to 2.0 and language packs.  Second question. One reason I want to move to Apache is the ability to use  search engine friendly URLs. Can this be turned on in an existing structure or does this function only work for completely new forums?

10.    Test and backup

Would this be a good plan or anything else I need to consider. Thanks for your support of a newbie SMF-admin

Hello there.

As i can see you are on good way yourself, but here u are some tips that might be helpful.
When you move forum to new host (or other directory) you must fix its paths and urls by uploading and running repair_settings.php
Creating Modifications

About 6 step - I dont see the reason for install again. If you move all files from win host to linux, and if you import database, you can use it.
Just run repair_settings file as i suggested, to fix database settings as well.
Abot 9 step - Yes you can turn this feature on even if you didnt chose it on forum install. Admin panel - feature settings

Also, take a look at Upgrading SMF docs for more information.

If you need any help, or if you have any question feel free to ask here.

Regards.
