Upgrade erases custom images?

I've upload some images into the
home/smf/Themes/default/images foder
and the .../images/topic folder.
Will these images be erased by an upgrade?
Shall i backup them first?

From what version to what version? You can back them up, perform the update and reupload them.

Just make a copy of the default theme, and duplicate the images directory in the copy.  Then you can change them there without problems.

I guess the same happens with button set and smilies.

I thought that upgrade, was affecting only the php code, leaving theme changes intact.
Wouldn't be better if so?

No, because template changes are inevitable.  If a feature is added, the templates need changing and images need changing.  Some releases we optimize graphics.

I suggest not modifying the default theme, as I've said so many times before.

I totally agree with u. Custom themes are what I'm talking abt.
