Best method for tracking member referrals?

What's the best method to track existing members and how many new members they get to join? I'm thinking about running a promotion to boost membership levels, but want to make sure this can be done.

I would use the referrals mod which can used to track about how many are referred by a specific user. The member would give out a referral link for a new user to join the forum.

Is this referral mod reliable? Any issues with members being able to "fake" referrals?

A user could register multiple accounts from the same IP or if they go on other computers and create new users but there really is no way around the second part.
