I'm tying to do a clean install. I was using php but don't have on the forum so I deleted everything except the "cgi" and "stats" file. should I delete those as well?

I have already downloaded and uploaded the "smf_1-0-5_install.zip" file the server. I point my browser to "http://link-exchange-forum.tld/forum/install.php" and it brings me to an error page that says I don't right to access

I take it that you unpacked the files before uploading? I can install for you if you are still having problems.

hi Redone. I'll assume that I didn't upack the files because I don't know what it means to do that. I'll try again this Sunday (at the latest) to install the forum. and I noticed that you have a hosting company in your sig is that your company? I'm currently with godaddy and I love their customer support , prices and reliability, but I would like a little more support with forums.

please keep in mind that my first goal is to learn, and I wouldn't mind you installing the forum for me if I am unable to. however, if you do do the install for me, I would appreciate it if you walk through the steps and show me what I did and didn't do right or wrong, and what I should have looked for? etc. if you like you can reach me at [email protected]

thanks Jose

Ok to unpack the files you need something like WinZIP winzip.com (its not free.  its a trial that never ends.)or 7-zip - http://www.7-zip.org/.  If you want anyone of us can install it for you.  If anything contact me.

As Lil_J said download and use WinZip to extract all the files for your install to a folder on your PC. The best advice I can give you regarding carrying out the install is to read the readme.html file that is included in your installation.

That file will detail everything you need to do to complete your install. I can't really discuss hosting here as this is a support forum and this would be the wrong board, forum for that.

If you experience problems in getting your install working I will help you along. For questions about hosting just drop me a pm.

I don't mind helping people out and to be honest I don't expect anything in return.

:D

p.s Here is a useful link for you.

thanks for the replies. I've downloaded http://www.7-zip.org/ [nofollow] like LiL_J recommended because it's free and I'll try to do the install tommorrow (Sunday) morning and will read the readme.html file and see if I can do it.

as far as the hosting, I have to do it because on one my I sites I list and review free and low cost webmaster resources. so it's what I like to do. anyway I am looking for a low cost host that provides great support for free forums software. but that's an issue for another time.

thanks to both of you for the help so far
