Trying to upload 1.1 RC1 Upgrade to a 1.1.4 beta install

I have downloaded the upgrade package and I'm trying to use it to upgrade a 1.1.4beta install with no mods. Default theme is pristine and other themes are based on it. I have set all the following to 777

attachments (directory)
avatars (directory)
Packages (directory)
Packages/installed.list
Packages/server.list
Smileys (directory)
Themes (directory)
Themes/default/languages/Install.english.php (and any other Install.language.php files.)
agreement.txt
Settings.php
Settings_bak.php

with the exception of install.php, which isn't there yet.

But I get the following error message:

An Error Has Occurred!   
The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted.

I can resort to an ftp manual upgrade, but I'd have thought I should be able to upgrade through the Package manager for an RC.

I don't think you can use the packagemanager for this upgrade. Where did you get 1.1 Beta 4?
