Calendar and Birthday Emails

I have noticed the calendar displays a list of members on dates where their birthdays fall. Does this help SMF in tracking which users to send birthday emails to? Because I would like to disable the calendar but I am worried it may stop sending birthday emails.

The calendar just displays it; it's stored in the user's profile even if the calendar is disabled. IIRC birthday emails are not connected to the calendar.
