Hi,

I'm having an absolute 'mare trying to install SMF. I have uploaded SMF to my FTP server and changed all the permissions accordingly - though my host now insists that all files by 644 and directories 755). I copy the URL of install.php to clipboard and paste it into my firefox address bar in order to execute it. Having been prompted to enter my FTP password, I am met only with the above error.

Can anyone help?

I've installed SMF to free hosts before and never encountered this problem.

Many thanks.

Sir Osis of Liver

Would appear you're trying to install SMF on a host account that is not running php.  No can do.

The host has phpmyadmin and I've actually used it in the past.

Run phpinfo (attached) and see what your php configuration looks like.

I actually tried that from replies to another thread. I uploaded it to my root directory and tried to run it but either came up blank when I c+p'ed the address from FileZilla or, if I used the http:// address, got a 403 Forbidden Error.

You need to put it in the root of your site. Then, if your site was at http://www.yourforum.com you'd need to browse to http://www.yourforum.com/php.info

Before you do that, make sure Filezilla has it's "transfer type" set to "binary", not "auto", which is the default setting.

If your host does not have php installed, phpinfo will not run.

hmm as i am reading your first post correctly....

you cannot copy and paste install.php from your FTP into your browser

just fire your browser up and goto your domain in example http://www.domain.tld/install.php if thats the correct location of your $forum_root = Folder/Directory !!

Looks like op is running install.php correctly.  The error he's getting is at the top of the install script -

// Don't have PHP support, do you?
// ><html dir="ltr"><head><title>Error!</title></head><body>Sorry, this installer requires PHP!<div style="display: none;">
