Connection Problems

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

I have no idea why the database has suddenly stopped working. It has been this way for 3 days now and I have not touched the server setting, or anything at all in weeks, and all of a sudden it stopped working 3 days ago. I checked settings.php and the database username and password matched. I created a new user and pw and tried that but that didn't work so I switched back to the old one for now.

Any help or point in the right direction would be very helpful, because right now I am completely lost. Thank you.

Are you using the correct mySQL server? (eg: are you using a remote server, or localhost?)
Did you add the new user & password to the right database?
Is your prefix set OK? Did you try repairing the database, just in case?

Also who is your host?

When I used to use free hosts years ago I got these errors frequently.
"The Book of Arantor, 17:3-5
And I said unto him, thy database query shalt always be sent by the messenger of $smcFunc
And $smcFunc shall protect you against injections and evil
And so it came to pass that mysql_query was declared deprecated and even though he says he is not
dead yet, the time was soon to come to pass when mysql_query shall be gone and no more
