No Access to Attachments and Avatars

I'm trying to help a friend with the inability to connect with attachments and avatars. SMF 2.0.8

In Admin>Attachments & Avatars>Attachment Settings & also In Admin>Attachments & Avatars>Avatar Settings they are both showing in red and I assume by this it's 'possibly' a path problem.

For Avatars it shows the Current Directory / Path / 18373 files / Does Not Exist (in red).

The paths seem to be correct, as shown here for attachments. ----- >     /home/xxxxxxx/public_html/attachments

Is attachments capitalised by any chance??

Cannot access attachments upload path!

Thanks very much Illori, it's something he'll have to do as he has the access to FTP.

I have an issue when making Attachments and Avatars folder a symbolic link.

I have no issue when they are in the standard install folder in /var/www/html/forum/Attachments.
I set permissions to 777 and have same issue.
I'm trying to move for disk space reasons to mount /smf/Attachments

I know I have permissions and path correct, do I need to change an Apache or php setting?

This is Redhat 6.5 with Apache.
