Absolute path

My provider uses a webcluster which after an error of some sort sipmly switches to another server where the URL remains the same but where the absolute path changes. The result is that the forum stops behaving correctly (as you can imagine).

1) Why do we need the absolute path and can this be corrected automatically?

2) I changed it through the Admin for the Themes, the avatars and attachments (three places). It seems OK. Did I miss anything?

The best (and by far the easiest) way to make sure the paths are changed everywhere they need to be is to use the repair_settings tool  http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Repair_settings.php

Thanks, did not know the tool.
Used it, it works OK, problem solved.

however, you are going to have to continue to "fix" the setting each and every time they do that....
