Not receiving email notification for new user or email from users

I am not receiving email notification for new registrations or if i try to send or receive any type of email. I am using Gmail as my email address as the admin. i have been reading for hours trying to figure why emails is not work at all. Any help would be great. Not sure if i am suppose to use default PHP for mail or SMTP.
