Why does smf not add an option to prohibit/prevent links in signatures? That seems to me like an obvious thing to do. I am freaking tired of viagra spam links.

Deaks

it does ... what version of smf do you have?

Please be true.

go to Features and Options - Signatures and where it says Enabled BBC Tags remove the check out of "url" and "html" then click save.

This only sets it for new signatures, to set it for existing ones click on the word here on the following displayed message on your admin panel "Note that settings are not applied to existing signatures by default. Click here to apply rules to all existing signatures."

I have done that a long time a ago, but that does not help.

the issue atm is not the spam links but more their is a current wave of spammers hitting sites atm mostly russian, best bet is take preventative measures, add more questions into the question loop so if you ask 3 questions make sure their is a pool of at least 10, add some mods such as project honeypot, arantors misc spam mod is good, also ban them.  My own forum has no spam, my friends forum I have been active banning spammers for a few hours other night and finally we sorted.

Spam - my forum is flooded with spam, what can I do

Why does smf not do it? Well, because it is not necessary... Prevent the spammers from registering in the first place or stop them from adding signatures...

This is the kind of answer i would expect from you. It is necessary, because you cannot prevent all spammers, and if you could it would also prevent most real users from registering. I don't want me and my real users to become a victim in a war between clever spam software
and less clever anti spam software. Security questions are a poor defense, because there are real humans that get paid to break them for the spam software. The option to prohibit/prevent links in signatures is a little easy fix, to the signature problem. Why not do it? Why not give me and others the option to do it, if we want to do it.

1- I can and have prevented all spammers for the past 2 years....
2- You can already restrict new users from adding a signature at all - until they are proven not to be spammers - we do that here. This is even better than just stopping links because they can't post ANYTHING to their sigs.
3- What you want --- and what is actually useful to the majority of admins -- seem to be different things.  We build the forum software for the majority and adding random little checks and switches makes things complicated, can slow things down and over-all is generally not needed.

That sounds like a solution i can use. Can you please explain how to do this.

Burke ♞ Knight

Yes, indeed. I am getting hit hard by spammers on one of my site, yet not ONE of them has had the ability to post, or even activate their account. So no, this is not needed.

Also, to clarify something, unchecking the URL tag in BBC section will NOT prevent links from being used in signatures.
It prevents the use of the URL BBC, but a link can still be entered without the URL BBC tag. This is proven on my test site.

stop the new users from editing profiles, and they won't be able to add a signature....

there are also a few mods that break out the permissions more granularly...

Yes, that's the best way to stop those that make it past the anti-spam measures. :)

BB13

This is unclear. How do i break out the permissions more gradually? So that i does only affect new unproven users.

Illori

Ah... You need to learn to use the permissions system... ;)

Turn on permissions for post count groups.
Then restrict the newbies group.
