Suddenly ssi_whosOnline stopped working and hangs, cannot make it work

Yesteday I noticed a sudden strange behavior of ssi_whosOnline function. It  happened as I was surfing, page reloading cripped my page.

I use SSI.php in my site' s main page. I noticed that the page hangs after the ssi_whosOnline() command. I have not changed anything before this happened. I reloaded again the main page and SSI.php, no change. By removing the ssi_whosOnline() command the rest is working OK even an added function to display the last 6 photos of my bridged Coppermine gallery.

The same problem exists when running SSI_examples.php in both my working forum (SMF 1.03)

and a test forum in SMF 1.1 beta3p which is independent and without any major modification

I think it might be a server problem, it runs in safe mode. I can' t otherwise explain the same problem that occured suddenly in two independent forums with different versions but in the same server. Also ssi_logOnline hangs, the other functions seem to work OK.

ssi_examples.php works OK in test forums in my PC. I tried it in a different PC it shows the same problem.

I would be glad to hear another possible cause and how I could explain the problem better to my server provider.

Crazy thing this problem.

Now (about 24 hours after first observed) the function ssi_whosOnline works in my working forum

but not on my test forum

I have not done a change to make a work. I had sent e-mail to my server provider for another reason, referring that I also had a might be server problem, without details as I waited feedback from here.

In the meanwhile the two forums worked without any noticeable problem or an error message in the administration panel.

@^^%$&*^$*%##$%#(^% while writing this message it has appeared again in my working forum too.

ADDED: I upgraded the test forum from1.1 beta3p to 1.1 RC1. The upgrade was flowless. No change in the problem. The two forums work OK also Coppermine Gallery and Flashchat bridged to my working forum. New members have been subscribed, everything OK but this ssi_whosOnline misfunction.

Well it finally was a server problem, they were upgrading PHP in my server.

Still an interesting problem in theory as what exactly might have caused such a behavior.
