Packages have disappeared from browse packages

do you have a temp folder and a backup folder in the Packages folder? if not create them [both in lower case].

Thanks Illori, that was the issue, I had no temp folder :)

It can still be an ownership problem. SMF needs to create a "temp" folder inside Packages for the install/uninstall operations and, when it can't, that error is triggered.
Try to create that folder yourself, see if that helps ;)

Yet my point remains: SMF should be able to create that folder itself so there's something wrong with permissions/ownership
