I'm just curious, but how exactly does one find the root directory from the Admin Panel? A step-by-step guide would be helpful

What do you mean by "root directory"? The one where SMF is installed in?
ACP --> Configuration --> Server Settings --> Database and Paths --> SMF Directory

I'm trying to upload a necessary file to the root directory which was why I was asking the question. My friend who is an admin owns the site's server and that is why I asked the question.

The term is a bit ambiguous. The root of your site might not be the root of your forum. :)

On a Windows hard disk, the root would be C: The directories are kinda branches, off of that root.

The root of your SITE will be something like "public_html".

The root of your FORUM will be where Settings.php is.

Dunno why you'd want to access it from the SMF admin panel, though. Did he mean for you to use FTP, perhaps?

Professor Sea

I've been wanting to use FTP software, but to get the server password from my friend would be necessary if hard for me to ask him...

What is it that you want to do, exactly?

Professor Sea

Access my site's root directory to install the file obviously, but the site is hosted on my friend's server.

Not trying to state the obvious, but why don't you ask him to either put the file for you or give you FTP access?

I'll do that, I'll have to ask him first. Will keep you guys updated on what happens...

Or, the File Manager, in CPanel, perhaps, if you have access to that?
