Upgrading an SMF installation on a server that was hacked

SMF rookie (but experienced with other PHP Web applications) - need advice on how to determine if an older SMF installation (1.1.9) on a server whose other PHP applications were hacked has been hacked. I am suspicious but can I confirm my suspicions?  And what's my best route- install the 1.1.20 upgrade version and run the upgrader?   Or something else?

I would recommend following the steps in the wiki/FAQ article on hacked...


Mist specifically, delete everything except the avatars and attachments and then upload and run the upgrade...   I would recommend upgrading to 2.0.9, since you need to start fresh anyway
