Need help with template modification

Hi guys just installed SMF and found it easy to do.  I HAVE been searching site for some time but have been unable to find info I need.  Could do with basic info and or picture on how to do the following
1. Modify header
2. Modify footer
3. Add three google ads so that they appear on every page of site
I am good with html but not too good with php.  I am used to phpbb3 and in that would have modified overall header, overall footer and index.php but cannot find equivalent.

to modify the header and footer, you would modify the index.template.php for whatever theme(s) that you have installed.

the functions that display the header and footer are in that file.

for adding adverts, I recommend installing the ad manager mod...
