Problem on uploads

Our board was totally messed up by an attach on our provider.  We recopied the files back in and upgraded to 1.1 when rebuilding the site.  Ever since our users cannot upload avatars or attachments.

I set the attachment folder to 777 as I think it should be but still to no avail.  Also when you go into the admin section and choose avatars and attachments to manage the upload directory is showing red. (I assume since it dont believe it is writeable).

Any quick sugestions on what I should try next

I have been fighting this on and off for 2 days.  30 seconds after asking for help I got it.
