How to get rid of upgrade.php?

When someone does an upgrade there is the potential for pieces of previously installed mods to have left over code, or sometimes someone uninstalls a mod, the package manager says it installed cleanly, yet some code didn't fully uninstall.

When this happens, there is the potential for there to be issues (there won't be with your sub-board mod in question as that is just one really small edit) so it is always good to go through all of the mod's parser info so you can see exactly what files have been modified and what code modifies those files. If you have a mod that you uninstalled, yet pieces of that mod are still in a file or two, it really helps for you to be able to manually remove the code yourself.

This can be really scary if you haven't done it before, as nobody wants to mess up their forum. A recommendation and what has actually taught me the most, is to create a test site that you can add mods to, manually delete them from files, etc. You will most likely make mistakes and screw the forum up a bunch, but you can always just restore it from a backup...and at least it's just a test site. ;)

I steer far away from code-changing. I actually tried to use a test forum, but somehow it didn't work and I've now given up. Trouble is that I have no 'feeling' for computer stuff. I can do what I need in Word and Excel and I like to think I'm not too bad with using the internet, but that's it. It's the content of my forum that I'm good at, the technical part of it is just torture and it's unlikely that will ever change.

That's why we are here. To help you in the processes you're not comfortable with ;)

Yes, well... I think the gaps in my basic IT knowledge have made some members here sort of give up on me... That's e.g. why I still haven't been able to install a Honey Pot on my forum. Some people here are actually saying "What the heck are you doing with a forum with your level of knowledge?", and I can't blame them for that.

br360

There are some very helpful people here, and I doubt anyone would give up on helping anyone else that was wanting to learn or had issues. Each person here regardless of their skill set and knowledge now, knew nothing or very little about running forums at one time.

Nobody should worry about asking something that they think is dumb or obvious to everyone else...if we did, this forum would be practically empty. ;)

For every "dumb" question someone posts, there are probably a ton of other people that had wondered the same thing too.

Auke

Well, that topic just had no answers anymore after that remark was made by some major contributor.

If someone here can explain (in baby steps!) to me how to install a Honey Pot on my forum (SMF 2.0.10, hosted by CoreISP) I would be very grateful. Without the Honey Pot the Bad Behaviour mod I installed is not doing very much. I still have some minor troubles to solve on my forum, but those daily 30+ spammembers are definitely my main concern. I already signed up to Project Honey Pot.

br360

Have you tried to install the honeypot mod that integrates with the account you signed up there with? http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2155

That mod has images on how to utilize it, and there is also the support topic for that mod which will hopefully be able to answer any questions you have.

The bad behavior mod has honeypot built in...

However, it does not depend on it... Bad behavior and httpBL are two separate services, they are just combined into one mod.

Sign up for a honeypot on httpBL and then extract the files into your forum root...
In the httpBL settings of the bb mod, out your honeypot file name and trigger word.
And your httpbl API key

You mean: Bad Behaviour has a built in function that enables it to work with data from Project Honey Pot.

I have installed Bad Behaviour, but before it uses the Project Honey Pot HTTP Blacklist, it wants me to fill in 1) http:BL Access key, 2) Honeypot Link and 3) Honeypot Link word. I figured out I had to register at Project Honey Pot, which I did. But what and how to do next, I'm still at a loss.

Bad Behaviour has already blocked a couple of dozen IP's from getting to my site (it claims 83 in the last 7 days), but I still have loads of spammers every day. That's why I need to figure out the Honey Pot thing.

Your last 3 sentences are still over my head.

Kindred

you can not depend solely on BB or on httpBL.

QUESTIONS.... good questions, are your number one method to prevent spammer registrations.

register at honeypot.
get your access key/api key
put it int the BB/httpBL setting

then upload the honeypot files into your forum root directory
then tell the BB/httBL settings what the honeypot filename is and what the honeypot keyword is.

Okay, I got my http:BL key now. Hurray!

I'm still at a loss though, were to find/get the honeypot filename/link and the honeypot key/link word.

Kindred

You would have gotten it in a zip file after you signed up for honeypot

The only mail I ever received from Project Honey Pot was the registration verification mail, which of course did not contain any files. I just rechecked to be sure. Any idea as to how/where I can get that that zip file now?

Kindred

you would have to ask that on the honeypot site/forums

I've sent them an email. I'll let you know how it goes.

Auke

I got a reply with a link. I'm now requested to choose a website scripting language. I may choose from:
ASP
ASP.Net2 / ASPX
Cold Fusion 5/MX
mod_perl
Movable Type 2.6+
Perl
PHP 4+
Python
SAP Netweaver BSP
What do you advise? I don't know anything about scripting languages.

For the other things I have to choose I will just go with default (script's name chosen for me, sharing stats with public, sharing my Honey Pot) unless you advise against it.

Oh, and a milestone I achieved yesterday: I kicked the 4000th spammer from my website! Hurray?

Illori

Auke

PHP 4+ it is.

After according this, I opened the ProjectHoneyPot_script.zip. I then did 'Extract without confirmation' with all files I got. I now got the following screen. Where to go/what to do next? I'm afraid that if I just try something I will screw things up...

The webpage I'm on says
QuoteAfter installing your script you need to activate it. To do so, simply install the script in the appropriate place on your server and access through your website via any Internet browser. If installed correctly, the script will contain instructions and a link. By clicking on that link you will activate the script so it can begin to deliver honey pot addresses.
The 'simply' is not so simple for me. Would you please give me detailed instructions?

Kindred

you need to ask for help from the honeypot folks... that is not part of SMF, and activating that would be their support

However, there is likely a readme in the file

or you may get help in the support topic for that mod as others may have done this before.
