looking for direction - Looking to hook into hot topics for my main site page.

Please excuse me if this is the wrong place for this, but I am not finding it easily.

I have SMF installed with my own custom built site and want to hook into SMF details like latest hot topic and so forth, but I am not seeing how to do this.

I have to believe it is possible, but no idea where to find this info.
