Membergroup for Board Mods?

I'm about 99% sure I know the answer to this, but just wanted to check.

If I want board mods to have any kinds of permissions, I have to set up a membergroup and add them to it manually, right?

There's no functional connection to board mods and a "real" group?

You're right, it could also be set as an invisible group, so only will be available on additional groups and won't show up on the group legend.
