I would like to make three versions of a theme, the main look will be the same, the colors will be different. What is the best approach?

I tried to download the installed theme I wanted to make a copy of, gave it a new name and did a find-replace in all the files to change every mention of the old name to the new. Then i FTP the new theme up, but when I tried to use it, the content of the whole forum went missing, so I guess that's not the right way to do it?

So how do I make a copy of a theme that is not the default one?

I'm wondering if you need permission from the theme author to do that?

no...  there is no need for permission. you can edit the theme on your own site however you want/need...

You cant DISTRIBUTE your copy without permission or a permissive license... but editing your own copy is fine.

as for the question..

just cop all of the files into another theme directory and rename the theme in theme_info.xml (or some variation of that filename)

Okay, I was wondering if copying the theme was considered 'editing' so now I know (as long as it's not distributed, of course). :)

Thank you both for your input!  :D

I stumbled upon something that might be a solution:

well, you can set a theme to be used for individual boards....   that is set in the board settings

:-) Yes I did that in my old forum, made a custom theme for each section. But that theme is outdated, so i need a 2.0-solution and kind of hoped I didn't need to copy the whole theme, just the files that are different between theme.

You need, a minimum of the index.template and index.css, I believe...  If you use the child of them option.... Otherwise, you need images etc for every theme
