mandatory avatar upload at registration

hello,

is there a way to force people to upload an avatar on the registration page ?
I'm willing to make the modifications my self i just need a few pointers

i was thinking maybe using

• the avatar upload script from the profile page
• use certain parts of this mod :
  http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=368

is this doable?
i know that i'll need to modify the pages

• registration.php
• registration.template.php

may i also add that I've noticed quite a few people asking the mod to in this topic
