Vertical/portrait photos always upload sideways

I don't if this was been asked before, I'm a moderator of forum running SMF 2.0.11 I've noticed all portrait photos uploaded in attachments and profiles upload sideways I think it's generally photos taken on smartphones. What can be done about this if anything

Seems to be something in the EXIF data that causes this put it through GIMP and it self corrects weird

It's not all photos...  It would be photos which are taken in a rotated shot of the phone...  The pcs and macs will auto adjust the photo orientation these days...   Smf does not, however.
